History and Benefits of Juicers
Knowing the basics of juicers will help you get the best model for your needs.
They have been around since 1930 when a man named Dr. Norman Walker created the first one.
He must have known the health benefits of juicing as he lived to a ripe old age of 108 years old.
This helps you easily obtain the daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables.
Many people are not getting the daily allowance of fruits and vegetables and they show it with their lack of energy and stamina.
It is also ideal for cancer patients who have finished their treatment.
It helps them put back the vitamins and minerals they lost while going through therapy and helps to boost their immune systems. This flushes out unwanted toxins after chemotherapy.
Even though there are many benefits to juicing there are also some down sides if you don't do it properly.
Drinking too much of the flavorful juice can cause problems for those who need to control their blood sugar. Sugars from natural fruits are released into the bloodstream fast and this can cause spikes in a persons blood sugar.
As long as you know how to use juicing and not over do it, you will reap the benefits for a lifetime. It's is a very healthy habit to incorporate into your lifestyle.
So What Is A Juicer?
A juicer is a mechanical device that can be operated, either manually or electrically, to extract juice from vegetables, fruits and leafy greens. There are different types, depending on the fruit or the vegetable.
Often, fruit models are mistaken for blenders. The difference between a fruit juicer and a blender is that a juicer will have some kind of mechanism that will separate the pulp from the juice where as a blender grinds the fruits or vegetables and the pulp has to be manually strained.
The different types of juicers defer in how they work. Some of the common types include centrifugal, centrifugal ejection, masticating, manual press, single auger, dual cage auger and twin press.
Centrifugal models are one of the oldest types and have a simple design with a shredder and a strainer. This design uses the centrifuge principle to separate the juice from the pulp.
Centrifugal ejection models operate in the same way as the centrifugal juicers. The only difference is that, in the centrifugal ejection type, the basket has slanted sides, making it easy to clean. One of the disadvantages of centrifugal ejection model is that it is noisy. But it is very user-friendly and the maintenance is very easy.
The masticating type has a slow speed motor that masticates the fruits and vegetables. Manual press juicer is one of the healthiest types as it is free from oxidation since it uses pressure to extract juice.
How to go about shopping for the best model?
One of the factors that people go by is the cost. Though there is no straight equation that high price means high quality, there is always a certain amount of correlation between the two.
Besides the price, there are other important factors to be considered.
First, you need to find a user-friendly machine. Look for an easy to use juicer that does not require much time and effort to operate and clean.
Second, you need to look for a reliable brand that does not require you to replace parts often.
Third, go for slow speed juicers as they have reduced oxidation effects.
The next factor to take into consideration is the quantity of juice your model can extract from the given quantity of food.
Some models yield more pulp than juice. Models that extract the pulp to an outside container leave less pulp behind than those that separate the pulp inside the machine. You also want your models to be dishwasher safe and compact.
Some of the popular and reliable brands are; Champion, Omega, Nutrisource, Lequip, Juice Fountain, Samson, Solo Star, Green Star and Green Power.
